Bertha Makes Landfall As 2nd Named Storm Before Hurricane Season Begins

Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall late Wednesday morning near Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, bringing with it heavy rainfall and 50 mile per hour maximum sustained winds.

That rain is expected to spread northward through the state.

The National Hurricane Center made the surprising announcement after 8 a.m. Wednesday that the disturbance, which had been sitting over Florida just Tuesday morning, skipped tropical depression status and was a tropical storm, getting ready to hit the South Carolina coast.

It was the same system that soaked Florida during the Memorial Day weekend and more storms are expected on Wednesday in connection with it along Florida's east coast.

As of 11 a.m., a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Edisto Beach, SC to South Santee River, SC.

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning, in this case for the next few hours.

This marks the second named storm prior to the official start of the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which gets underway Monday, June 1.
