Mariners Take Opener From Rays

The Seattle Mariners (79-61) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays (85-56) 1-0 on Thursday night at Tropicana Field.

Zack Littell (3-5, 4.29) put together a brilliant outing, but it was not enough. He allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out four and walking one in eight innings of work. The only run he allowed was a RBI single to Mike Ford in the second inning.

Unfortunately the Rays offense was unable to get to Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo (12-7, 3.08). He pitched six shutout innings before the Mariners bullpen came in and continued to keep the Rays offense off-balance, as the Rays managed only four hits total on the night.

The Rays and Mariners now meet in the second game of their three-game series on Friday night. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:40 PM - Ronnie & T-Kras begin pregame coverage at 5:30 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620, your Home of Rays Baseball.
