Rays Tie Blue Jays For Top Wild Card Spot

The Tampa Bay Rays (84-67) beat the Toronto Blue Jays (84-67) 10-6 on Friday night at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay has tied Toronto for the top Wild Card spot in the American League, with both teams trailing the Yankees by eight games in the East.

The Rays scored two runs in the first, and added another in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. The Blue Jays answered with a four-run fifth, before Randy Arozarena hit a three-run homer in the fifth to give Tampa Bay a 6-4 lead.

The Blue Jays tied the game with a two-run sixth, but the Rays came through in the eighth inning with the hits they needed to take a lead. Randy Arozarena had his fifth and sixth RBIs of the night in the inning to push the Rays lead all the way to 10-6.

Jeffrey Springs got the start and allowed four runs, three of them earned, in five innings of work that saw him allow six hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Javy Guerra (1-0, 6.14) picked up the win out of the bullpen after pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

The Rays now look to win the series against the Blue Jays on Saturday night. Kickoff Saturday is scheduled for 6:10 PM - Neil Solondz begins pregame coverage at 5:30 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
