Rays Drop Opener To Tigers, Lose Wander Franco To Injury

The Detroit Tigers (67-75) knocked off the Tampa Bay Rays (88-53) 10-4 on Friday night in Detroit.

Rookie Wander Franco singled in the first inning to extend his remarkable streak of reaching games to 39 consecutive games, before leaving the game with a hamstring injury. After the game Rays manager Kevin Cash said the rookie is almost certainly going to the IL.

The Rays led the game 4-3 at the seventh inning stretch, but Detroit answered in a big way. Jonathan Schoop hit a grand slam in the seventh inning off Andrew Kittredge, and Victor Reyes hit a three-run homer off Shawn Armstrong in the eighth, to take command of the game.

Michael Wacha got the start for the Rays and allowed one earned run on three hits in five innings of work - Pete Fairbanks (3-6, 4.21) took the loss allowing three earned run in one-third innings of work.

The Rays look to bounce back and even up the three game series against the Tigers on Saturday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM - pregame coverage begins with Neil Solondz at 5:30 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
