The Tampa Bay Rays (79-48) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (63-63) 7-4 on Wednesday night in Philadelphia. The win gives the Rays a sweep in the short two game series against the Phillies, and maintains their lead at 4.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East race.
Tied 4-4 in the ninth inning, Francisco Mejia hit a towering three-run home run that lifted the Rays to a 7-4 lead. He was one of four Rays to have multiple hits, led by Wander Franco who went 3-5 on the night. Brandon Lowe also blasted his 30th home run of the season in the win.
Ryan Yarbrough got the start, pitching four innings in which he allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out none and walking two. Collin McHugh (5-1, 1.43) got the win after working the final two innings of the game.
The Rays are now off on Thursday before beginning a three-game series with the Orioles in Baltimore on Friday night. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05 PM - pregame coverage begins with Jay Recher and the Inside Pitch at 6:00 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
