Rays Pull Within Half Game of Red Sox In AL East With Series Opening Win

The Tampa Bay Rays (62-42) defeated the Boston Red Sox (63-42) 7-3 on Friday night at Tropicana Field. The win pulls the Rays within a half game of the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.

The Rays got a two-run homer from Yandy Diaz in the first, and a two-run double from Wander Franco in the third, to take a 4-0 lead. When Boston answered with two runs in the top of the fourth, the Rays answered with homers from Mike Zunino and Randy Arozerena to pull away.

Josh Fleming (8-5, 4.15) pitched five innings in which he allowed three runs, all of them earned, on eight hits while striking out seven and walking two. From there, Ryan Sherrif, JT Chargois, Louis Head and Jeffrey Springs all combined to throw four shutout innings to close out the game.

The Rays and Red Sox now meet in game two of the three game series on Saturday night. First pitch from Tropicana Field is scheduled for 6:10 PM - pregame coverage begins with Neil Solondz at 5:30 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
