Rays Win Opener In Kansas City

The Tampa Bay Rays (9-8) defeated the Kansas City Royals (9-6) 4-1 on Monday night in Missouri.

The Rays got the scoring started in the fifth inning with two runs, thanks in part to some defensive miscues from Kansas City. They added a run in the seventh and a run in the ninth to build a 4-0 lead before Kansas City scored in the bottom of the ninth to avoid being shutout.

Josh Fleming (1-1, 0.87) picked up the victory with a tremendous performance. He pitched five and one-third innings of shutout baseball, striking out three and walking none while allowing just two hits.

The Rays and Royals meet in the second game of the series on Tuesday night - first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM, with pregame coverage beginning with Jay Recher and the Inside Pitch at 7 on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
