The Tampa Bay Rays received the worst news possible for one of their starting pitchers.
Manager Kevin Cash confirmed Friday that right-hander Yonny Chirinos will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
"Very unfortunate for us, for Yonny," Cash said. "You feel for the guy."
Cash said along with the rest of 2020, Chirinos will also miss "the foreseeable of next year."
The right-hander was placed on the injured list Wednesday after reporting problems after a bullpen session in New York.
