Rays Winning Streak Ends In Extras To Jays

The Tampa Bay Rays rallied from a 4-1 second inning deficit to force extra innings, but a RBI double by Cavan Biggio off Aaron loup to start the tenth inning broke a 4-4 tie, and the Toronto Blue Jays would hang on for a 6-5 win over the Rays to end Tampa Bay's five-game winning streak.

After Brandon Lowe got the Rays out to a 1-0 lead in the first with his ninth home run of the year, Teoscar Hernandez and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit back-to-back solo home runs off Ryan Yarbrough to give Toronto the lead, and they would add on with a RBI double by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and a run-scoring single from Randal Grichuk.

Yandy Diaz cut the deficit back to 4-2 in the third with his second home run of the year and second in as many days, but the Rays would not be able to get any closer against Blue Jays starter Matt Shoemaker. But Shoemaker was lifted to start the sixth and Tampa Bay was able to get the game tied up against reliever Ryan Borucki. The left-hander started by walking Lowe and Diaz to start the inning, and Jose Martinez, pinch-hitting for Ji-Man Choi, followed with a double that brought in both runners to make it 4-4. The Rays could not break the stalemate though as Rafael Dolis stranded the bases loaded by striking out Michael Perez to end the inning.

The game remained 4-4 until the top of the tenth, when Biggio's double off Aaron Loup broke the tie and a sacrifice fly by Gurriel two batters later brought in the right fielder to make it 6-4.

Tampa Bay got an RBI single by Diaz off Jordan Romano to start the home half of the tenth, and a two-out base hit by Manuel Margot moved pinch-runner Willy Adames to third base, but Hunter Renfroe grounded back to Romano to end the game.

The loss drops the Rays percentage points behind the idle New York Yankees for first place in the American League East.

Tampa Bay will look to start a new winning streak Saturday evening, as Aaron Slegers (0-0, 11.25 ERA) takes on Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-1, 3.46 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 5:30 with The Inside Pitch.
