ST. PETERSBURG (WDAE) — In the wake of the killing of George Floyd by a now-former member of the Minneapolis Police Department, the Tampa Bay Rays and Tampa Bay Rowdies have announced they will make an annual financial donation to those who fight the battle against systemic racism.
"Words are not enough and have never been enough," the teams said in a statement. "We need continued action and a re-education of our culture."
The Rays and Rowdies then said they will donate $100,000 per year "to supporting causes in the fight against systemic racism." No specific causes were mentioned, but the statement said the teams' committee on Diversity and Inclusion would be in charge of allocating the funds.
