MORTON TO THROW ON BACK FIELD: Pitcher Charlie Morton will make his next appearance on a mound today, but it won't be in a Grapefruit League game.

The 36-year-old, who in on pace to face the Pirates for Opening Day March 26, will throw four innings or about 60 pitches on a back field at Charlotte Sports Park in a simulated setting. Manager Kevin Cash said this week that Morton will likely have two of his final three turns through the rotation on the back fields.

FIRST WAVE OF CUTS MADE: The Rays made their first round of cuts from big-league camp today. Catcher Ronaldo Hernandez, infielders Vidal Brujan, Lucius Fox, and Kevin Padlo, and pitcher Brent Honeywell were all optioned to the minors, while pitcher Paul Campbell and infielder Tristan Gray were reassigned to minor-league camp.

That reduces the number of players in Major League Spring Training to 60.
