Carlos Rodriguez Talks Wander Franco, Scouting Caribbean And Pacific Rim

SAN DIEGO (WDAE) -- Scouting has changed by leaps and bounds over the years, and Rays vice president of player development and international scouting Carlos Rodriguez says that's changed how the team works at the winter meetings.

"We're more efficient with our time now than we used to be," Rodriguez said on Tuesday's episode of The Inside Pitch: Winter Meetings Edition, heard on WDAE.  "From back then, we'd sit around a bunch waiting for things to happen, and now we take it for what it is."

That efficiency is due to the ability to continues scouting and talking with players representatives year-round.

"There's so much work that goes on before and after [the Winter Meetings]," Rodriguez said.  "A lot of times back in the days this was the primary place where the agents would come and teams and everybody's in the same building. You'd go to their suite and you'd meet with the agents, and that still exists to a point but with technology and all the people involved in the decision-making process, it's a collaborative thing."

Carlos also went into the scouting of Wander Franco, and how they learned from their mistakes with Adrian Rondon, plus how scouting Pacific Rim players differs from the Caribbean.
