Rays Split Doubleheader With Orioles

ST. PETERSBURG (WDAE) -- At the end of Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Rays found themselves right where they started at the beginning of the day.

Tampa Bay split a doubleheader Tuesday with the Baltimore Orioles, dropping the matinee 4-2 but rebounding to take the nightcap by a 2-0 shutout.

The Rays took the lead in the fourth inning of the matinee, as Tommy Pham led off the fourth inning with a base hit against Ty Blach and Travis d'Arnaud followed with a two-run homer off the batters eye in center.

But Trevor Richards allowed a two-run homer to Rio Ruiz in the top of the fifth that tied the game, and Anthony Santander broke the tie in the sixth with a solo blast off Oliver Drake.

Baltimore added an insurance run in the ninth against Hoby Milner, as Mark Trumbo followed a Mason Williams single with a double to make it 4-2.

After a 45-minute break between contests, Tampa Bay again took a lead in the fourth inning in the nightcap, with Austin Meadows turned around a Gabriel Ynoa offering and sending it deep into the seats in right for his 26th home run of the season.

Meanwhile, the Rays used seven different pitchers to keep Baltimore off the scoreboard along with a little help from the Orioles offense. Baltimore's best opportunity to score came in the top of the third against Jalen Beeks, as Chris Davis singled and moved to second on a fielding error by Meadows. Richie Martin then tried to sacrifice Davis to third, and it appeared that Davis would score when the throw by Joey Wendle went wide of Eric Sogard at first base. But Martin was called out for runners interference and Davis was sent back to second base. Jonathan Villar then doubled off the wall in center, but Davis went back to second to tag up, thinking that Kevin Kiermaier would make the catch. He would stop at third and Villar was tagged out when he ran up Davis' back.

Tampa Bay added one more run in the seventh thanks to a Ji-Man Choi triple and a base hit by Avisail Garcia that scored pinch-runner Guillermo Heredia.

Diego Castillo (3-8) picked up the win in the nightcap, working two shutout innings and striking out four.

The Rays remain 23 games over .500 on the year after the twin-bill split. They have Wendesday off before welcoming the Toronto Blue Jays to Tropicana Field to begin a four-game series Thursday.
