Wife And Child Of Rays Minor Leaguer Bivens Killed In Virginia

The Tampa Bay Rays organization is grieving after learning of a tragedy involving the family of Montgomery Biscuits pitcher Blake Bivens.

"Earlier today, we learned that one of our players, Blake Bivens, suffered unimaginable loss," Biscuits CEO and managing owner Lou DiBella said in a statement. "First and foremost, the Biscuits thoughts and prayers are with Blake and all those who have been impacted by the tragedy. We appreciate the outpouring of support and concern, but ask that you respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time."

"Earlier today we learned that Blake Bivens, a pitcher with our Double-A affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits, suffered a terrible family tragedy in southern Virginia," the Rays said in a statement. "Our hearts are broken for Blake. We are grieving with him and will support him any way we can. We ask that everyone respect the privacy of the Bivens family and the Biscuits family during this extremely difficult time."

ESPN's Jeff Passan was the first to report that Bivens' wife Emily and son Cullen were two of three people killed at a home Tuesday in southern Virginia, and that Bivens' brother-in-law is being charged with three counts of homicide.

The Biscuits were scheduled to play a doubleheader Tuesday in Chattanooga, but the games were cancelled and will not be made up.

A GoFundMe has been established to help the Bivens family.
