Rays Survive Another Pressure Situation To Earn Series Win In Boston

The Tampa Bay Rays got home runs by a returning Kevin Kiermaier, Austin Meadows, and Willy Adames, and Ryan Yarbrough earned his tenth win as the Rays earned another series win in Boston with an 8-5 victory over the Red Sox Wednesday.

Travis d'Arnaud wasted no time getting Tampa Bay on the board, as his one-out single brought in Ji-Man Choi, who led off the game with a double of Red Sox starter Rick Porcello.

Kiermaier, activated from the 10-day injured list before the game, doubled the lead with a solo homer to start the second, his 11th of the year. Willy dames then started a two-out rally later in the inning with a base hit and Choi drew a walk to let Meadows hit, and the left fielder came through with a three-run blast into the seats in right, his 16th home run of the season.

Andrew Kittredge, who put up zeroes in the first two frames, came out to start the third, and saw Jackie Bradley reach on an error as Nate Lowe's flip went over the pitcher's head as he looked to cover the bag. A base hit by Mookie Betts would force manager Kevin Cash to bring in Yarbrough with runners at the corners, and Rafael Devers' sacrifice fly would bring in Bradley with an unearned run.

J.D. Martinez led off the fourth with a solo homer off Yarbrough to cut the lead back to 5-2.

Willy Adames chased Porcello in the sixth with a solo home run to make it 6-2, while Kiermaier and Matt Duffy each drove in a run in the seventh against Heath Hembree with a triple and single, respectively, pushing the lead to 8-2.

Boston scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, as Michael Chavis homered with one out, and Devers and Martinez each singled to drive in a run before Colin Poche struck out Andrew Benintendi to finally end the rally.

Poche worked a scoreless eighth, but Boston would bring the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth against Chaz Roe, who struck out Benintendi looking to end the game.

The win is Tampa Bay's seventh in eight games at Fenway Park in 2019, and their fourth in five games on their current road trip.

Tampa Bay can finish off a series sweep Thursday.
