The Rays Win Season Finale 9-4 Over Blue Jays

@jayRecher

When all was said and done, it was a pretty good year for the Tampa Bay Rays.

In the final game of the 2018 season, the Rays defeated the Blue Jays 9-4 on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field.

One of the recurring themes of this year was the "opener", which the team used again brilliantly in the last game of the year. Ryne Stanek (3-3) worked two scoreless innings to start the game before turning it over to Ryan Yarbrough.

The Blue Jays got on the board first in the top of the 3rd with an RBI double by Randal Grichuk, but the Rays answered right back in the bottom half against Toronto starter Sam Gaviglio.

Jake Bauers led off the inning with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Gaviglio (3-10) and came home to score when Tommy Pham stole second and the errant throw went into center field. Pham then scored on an RBI single by Joey Wendle to give the Rays a 2-1 lead.

Toronto tied it at two with a Kevin Pillar RBI double in the top of the 5th, but the Rays responded once again.

Bauers led off with a single again, this one of the bunt variety and moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Ciuffo. Mallex Smith then came up and stroked an RBI single to give Tampa Bay back the lead. After stealing second, his second of the game, Smith scored on and RBI triple by Pham. Wendle followed that with a sacrifice fly to center and the Rays had a 5-2 lead.

Bauers was 3 for 3 with a walk on the day, including a two-run double in the 7th that put the game out of reach and helped put it in the win column for Tampa Bay.

Pham was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Austin Pruitt threw 3 1/3 innings to pick up his 4th save of the season.
