Yankees Take Opener From Rays In New York

The New York Yankees (75-44) knocked off the Tampa Bay Rays (60-59) 4-1 on Tuesday night in New York City.

After the first pitch was delayed by about twenty minutes as an afternoon rainstorm cleared, the Yankees managed a first inning run off of Rays opener Hunter Wood (0-1, 4.10) to set a positive tone early for the home team.  Giancarlo Stanton doubled and advanced to third on a fielding error, and Aaron Hicks singled him in to give New York a 1-0 lead.

Jalen Beeks came on in relief of Wood, and was very good through his first three innings of work, striking out six in a row at one point while retiring the first nine batters he faced.  In the fifth inning, however, he ran into trouble - moments after Neil Walker walked to lead off the inning, Austin Romo hit a two run bomb that would prove to be the difference.  All told Beeks pitched five innings allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking two.

J.A. Happ (13-6, 3.86) was masterful on the mound for the Yankees, pitching seven shutout innings of one-run ball and dominating the Rays at seemingly every turn.  After he was pulled after seven innings while throwing 106 pitches, Dellin Betances allowed Willy Adames to hit a solo home run to pull the Rays within 3-1.  The Yankees offense answered when Greg Bird came up with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 4-1.  Aroldis Chapman then came in and worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 31st save of the season.

The Rays have now lost two in a row and look to bounce back when they meet the Yankees in the second of a three game series on Wednesday night.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM and you can hear the game, beginning with Steve Carney and the Inside Pitch at 6, on 620 WDAE & 95.3 FM throughout Tampa Bay.
