The Tampa Bay Rays will make another addition to their bullpen Thursday.
Manager Kevin Cash announced after Wednesday's loss that the team designated reliever Danny Farquhar for assignment in preparation to activate Brad Boxberger from the 60-day disabled list for Thursday's finale.
Farquhar appeared in 37 games with Tampa Bay, going 2-2 with a 4.11 earned run average, allowing 16 earned runs in 35 innings. His strikeout per 9 innings rate had fallen from 11.72 last year to 8.74 this season, and his walks per 9 innings jumped from 3.82 last season to 5.82 this year.
Boxberger went 4-3 with a 4.81 ERA in 27 appearances in an injury-shortened 2016 after leading the American League with 41 saves in 2015. He missed the start of this year with a flexor mass injury in his right tricep, then experienced oblique soreness in his final rehab start on his assignment, but pitched an inning Tuesday in Port Charlotte and was declared ready to return.
