SANFORD -- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he's not surprised a Leon County circuit judge issued a temporary injunction against the new state law banning abortions after 15 weeks under most circumstances, set to go into effect tomorrow.
DeSantis stated that "we knew that was likely to be... decided in that case," and the ruling was "not unanticipated," although he wasn't happy to see it.
"These are unborn babies that have heartbeat, they can feel pain, they can suck their thumb... to say that the state constitution mandates... dismemberment abortions, I just don't think that's the proper decision," DeSantis said.
The case is likely to go all the way to the Florida Supreme Court, which ruled decades ago that Florida's right to privacy protects abortion rights, above and beyond Roe v Wade, which the US Supreme Court overturned last week.
Both of the major Democratic candidates for governor, Nikki Fried and Charlie Crist, endorsed Judge John Cooper's decision.
DeSantis visited Crooms Academy for Information Technology, a magnet high school in Sanford, to tout an improvement in scores for students on civics exams.
