LAKELAND -- As the name implies, Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland is focused 100 percent on technology. But it's adding a new course unit designed to give its engineering-focused students a taste of the arts and humanities.
Dr. Wylie Lenz is running the program, and says it's a response to feedback from employers after students complete mandatory internships, to give students the chance to develop "skills that an overwhelming number of employers in all fields say they want," particularly communications skills.
Student internships are mandatory at Florida Poly, and Dr. Lenz says the feedback from employers indicates that while students are technically proficient, their communication abilities are often lacking.
The 12-credit unit is optional. It includes an introduction to literature, the history of science and technology, and at least nine courses in liberal arts, humanities and social sciences, followed by a three credit capstone course to show mastery of academic research and writing skills.
