Part of I-4 To Be Renamed for Fallen FHP Trooper

LAKELAND -- Wednesday, part of interstate 4 in Polk County will be renamed for a Florida Highway patrol trooper who gave his life there, almost half a century ago.

John C. Hagerty died March 18, 1970, while as his F-H-P plane was struck by a military aircraft over the interstate. He was 44 years old.

The FHP says Hagerty served for 13 years, starting in 1956, at duty stations including Frostproof, Punta Gorda, Stuart and Orlando.

The section named in his honor runs from mile markers 36 to 44, roughly from the State Road 33 exit to the State Road 559 exit for Polk City and Auburndale.

The ceremony starts at 2 pm at the FHP station in Lakeland.
