Seminoles Survive Louisiana-Monroe In Overtime

The Florida State Seminoles (1-1) held on to avoid being upset by Louisiana-Monroe (1-1) 45-44 in overtime at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

Things started well enough for the Seminoles, who got out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter and led 24-7 at halftime. Louisiana-Monroe pulled within 24-21 with two third quarter touchdowns, but the Seminoles answered early in the fourth quarter when James Blackman hit DJ Matthews for a score that made it 31-21.

The Warhawks were unfazed, however, as Caleb Brown orchestrated a nine-play, 60 yard touchdown drive to pull within 31-28. Moments later Chase Day intercepted a James Blackman pass in Florida State territory that set up a short touchdown drive from Louisiana-Monroe. When Josh Johnson ran in a 1-yard touchdown with 7:41 to go, the Warhawks took a 35-31 lead and could begin sniffing the upset.

The Seminoles answered on the very next drive, as Cam Akers ran in a 44-yard touchdown to give the Seminoles a 38-35 lead. The Warhawks wouldn't go down without a fight, as Jakob Meeks tied the game with a 24-yard field goal with 90 seconds to go in the fourth quarter that would force overtime.

The Seminoles got the ball first in overtime, and were able to score a touchdown on six plays when Cam Akers ran a 4-yard touchdown in to take a 45-38 lead. The Warhawks, however, only needed three plays to score a touchdown, and appeared poised to force a second overtime. However, Jakob Meeks missed the extra point and the Seminoles were able to hang on to the win.

James Blackman went 30-for-40 with 282 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns (and another rushing) and two interceptions in the winning effort. Cam Akers was the star of the game for the Seminoles, as he ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries - he also had five catches for 55 yards through the air and another score. Louisiana-Monroe quarterback went 23-for-38 with 241 yards passing and two touchdowns in the losing effort.

The competition gets tougher from here for the Seminoles as they had on the road next week. Kickoff from Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia, is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
