The National Football League today announced that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been designated to play an international regular season game in Munich, Germany during the 2022 season as part of the league’s International Series. The game will be played at FC Bayern Munich Stadium and will mark the first time an NFL regular season contest has been played in Germany. Details of the dates, game times and matchups will be released as part of the full 2022 NFL schedule announcement later this year.
“We look forward to participating in the first regular season NFL game in Munich, Germany later this fall as part of the International Series,” said Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Joel Glazer. “This historic game will play a crucial role in the NFL’s efforts to grow its international footprint while allowing us to directly engage NFL fans in Germany.”
Last year, as part of the League’s expansion of the regular season to 17 games, it was determined that, beginning with the 2022 season, up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams were eligible for a ninth regular-season home game would instead be designated to play a neutral-site international game each year. Each of the league’s 32 teams will be designated for one international matchup every eight years. This past December, the Buccaneers were granted access to Germany as an International Home Marketing Area, along with the Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.
The historic Munich contest will mark the fourth time Tampa Bay will play a game in the International Series, which dates back to 2007. The Buccaneers’ four appearances stand as the fourth-most behind the Jaguars (9, including 2022), Dolphins (5) and Raiders (5). Tampa Bay’s previous three games were played in London.
