Stamkos Sets Franchise Record For Points In 8-1 Rout Of Leafs

@jayRecher

And the Captain stands alone.

Steven Stamkos set the Tampa Bay Lightning franchise record for points with a power play goal in the 2nd period as the Lightning defeated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 8-1 on Thursday night at Amalie Arena.

In typical Stammer fashion, the goal came from his office in the left circle on a one-timer. Following the goal, the captain received a standing ovation from Bolts Nation & during the next TV timeout a video package narrated by Martin St. Louis -- who Stamkos passed on the all-time list with point #954 -- was played on the big screen. Nikita Kucherov, who added a power play goal of his own in Tampa Bay's four-goal 2nd period, picked up his 600th NHL point on Stamkos' record-breaking goal.

Following a scoreless 1st period, the Lightning finally broke through at 3:54 of the 2nd.

After some great work in the Toronto zone, Erik Cernak threw a puck on net that was deflected by Alex Killorn to put Tampa Bay up 1-0. Killorn also picked up an assist on Kucherov's goal, which made him the 8th player in franchise history with 400 points.

At the 12:25 mark the Bolts doubled their lead when Ross Colton deflected a pass from Nick Paul past Toronto netminder Erik Kallgren to make it 2-0.

Ondrej Palat deflected a Mikhail Sergachev point shot 72 seconds into the 3rd to put the Lightning up 5-0 and then Killorn added a power play goal at 4:33 to make it six.

Ilya Mikheyev scored the lone goal for the Leafs on the power play at 7:45, but Colton answered with his second of the night at 8:50 & Pat Maroon finished up the scoring with a goal at 14:11.

Andrei Vasilevskiy was solid in net, picking up 36 saves for his 36th win of the season.

Kallgren made 28 saves in defeat for the Leafs.

Missing The Point : Before tonight's game, the team announced that center Brayden Point would miss the contest due to a "lower body injury" and is listed as "day to day".
