Lightning Get Win Over Red Wings on Sunday Afternoon

The Tampa Bay Lightning (35-14-3) defeated the Detroit Red Wings (18-27-9) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Detroit.

A day after Curtis McElhinney got the start in net, the Lightning continued to rest Andrei Vasilevskiy as they turned to Christopher Gibson to start in net. He made the saves when he needed to, converting 22 of 23 saves to pick up the win.

The Lightning got the scoring started just sixteen seconds into the game when Blake Coleman put the puck in net - it was the fastest goal to start a road game in Lightning history. Early in the second period Mikhail Sergachev scored the insurance goal that would prove to be the difference. Though Filip Zadina scored in the third period to make it 2-1, that would be as close as the Red Wings would get.

Detroit had a great opportunity to tie the game with a 5-on-3 opportunity in the middle portion of the third period, but the Lightning defense and Christopher Gibson made the saves they needed to hang onto the win.

The Lightning now return to Tampa and will play host to the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night at Amalie Arena. Puck drop Wednesday is scheduled for 7 PM - pregame coverage begins at 6:00 on News Radio WFLA.
