Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is reportedly out indefinitely and feared to potentially miss the remainder of the season due to a sprained MCL, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday (December 16).
"More: Lions RB David Montgomery is now out indefinitely after suffering an MCL injury during Sunday’s loss to the Bills, sources tell ESPN. Montgomery is undergoing additional testing on his knee and getting a second opinion to confirm, but he could be lost for the season," Schefter wrote on his X account. "There are people in the Lions’ organization who believe that David Montgomery will be lost for the season with his sprained MCL, but there are additional tests to go through. Either way he’s out indefinitely, if not for the season."
Montgomery has recorded 775 yards and a team-best 12 rushing touchdowns on 185 carries as part of a one-two punch with second-year back Jahmyr Gibbs, who currently leads the Lions with 1,047 rushing yards and has 11 rushing touchdowns on 186 carries. The former Iowa State standout signed a two-year, $18.25 million extension with Detroit in October.
The Lions lost to the Buffalo Bills, 48-42, but still hold the No. 1 NFC playoff seed, tied at 11-2 with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Minnesota Vikings, who are scheduled to face Detroit in their second of two annual NFC North Division matchups in the final week of the season, have also clinched a playoff spot with an 11-2 record heading into their Monday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears.
