CLEARWATER -- It turns out a four-year-old boy struck by a car on Clearwater Beach Sunday is the son of Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Erik Swanson.
Police say Toby Swanson is hospitalized in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. The child was struck by an SUV driven by a valet at the Opal Sands on South Gulfview Boulevard Sunday. The driver is cooperating with police.
Canadian media report that Swanson will be away from the team indefinitely to be with his son. Blue Jays manager John Schneider says the child is "on the road to recovery."
