Tampa Council: Is Code Enforcement Shrinking The Housing Supply?

TAMPA -- As the city of Tampa deals with a housing shortage and affordability issues, some on City Council are wondering whether code enforcement is doing too much enforcing.

They got a full staff presentation at Thursday's workshop. Abbye Feeley runs the agency that oversees code issues. She says city workers aren't running around tearing down buildings that aren't in compliance.

City staffers aren't recommending any changes in the way complaints are handled, but they did call for conducting an information session on permits for the real estate industry. Council members are concerned that code enforcement may wipe out housing units and make Tampa's affordable housing problem worse.
