Matt Prater Wins Beer Challenge for City of Detroit

Washington Football Team v Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions placekicker Matt Prater won a bet with his Denver Broncos counterpart Brandon McManus.

Prater challenged McManus before the season that the kicker with the longest FG in the 2020 season would receive free beer for the fans of that team from the kicker who lost the competition.

In Week 10, Prater booted a 59-yard field goal that gave the Lions a win against the Washington Football Team. McManus’ longest field goal this year was just one yard shorter, a 58 yarder made in Week 12.

But McManus tried and tried Sunday to best Prater's 2020 mark, attempting field goals of 70 and 63 yards in the waning seconds of each half, both of which were blocked.

The bet was sponsored by Bud Light.

Miller Lite promoted a similar stunt in 2020 after the Chicago Cubs declined pitcher Jon Lester's 2021 option. Lester wanted to thank Chicago fans for their support, paying for beer at four Chicago establishments.

Though we're sure former Bucs kicker Matt Bryant would have loved to be part of this contest, having kicked a 63-yarder in 2006 to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the last second. Reminder: Bryant made his kick not in a dome, nor in the very thin air of Denver, but in a place where many a kicking career has come to die, the sea-level monster that is Raymond James Stadium.

Just sayin'.
