Minnesota Twins Prospect Ryan Costello Found Dead In New Zealand

Ryan Costello, 23

Ryan Costello, a prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization, was found dead in New Zealand. He was 23 years old. Costello arrived in New Zealand last week and was set to play a significant role for the Auckland Tuatara, a team in the Australian Baseball League. Officials believe Costello died of natural causes.

The Twins released a statement offering their condolences to Ryan's family and friends.

"The Minnesota Twins are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Ryan Costello yesterday in New Zealand. On behalf of the entire organization, the Twins send their most sincere condolences to Ryan's family, friends, coaches, and teammates. Ryan split the 2019 season between Single-A Ft. Myers and Double-A Pensacola, playing in 108 games."

Costello was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 31st round of the 2017 MLB draft and then traded to the Twins in 2018. He played 108 games in 2019, splitting time between the Single-A Fort Myers Miracle and Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos in Florida.

Jeremy Zoll, the Twins assistant general manager who is in charge the organization's farm system, tweeted that Costello was the "definition of a great teammate."

Ryan’s infectious energy and drive for greatness will never be forgotten. He is the definition of a great teammate and has been taken from us far too soon. Sending thoughts and prayers to the Costello family
