Jay's 10 Takeaways From Bucs Training Camp (8/3/19)

@jayRecher

Here are my 10 takeaways from Tampa Bay Buccaneers Training Camp today :

1) Ndamukong Suh, Demar Dotson and Jamel Dean were among those not practicing today. Neither was Lavonte David, but that didn't stop him from being right in there and coaching up his teammates. Gotta love #54.

2) Right off the bat, you could tell the passing game was going to have a good day. The combination routes that had poor throws and dropped passes last week was near-perfect and showed the attention to detail that lacked in previous practices.....Except for Justin Watson. He dropped another two passes today and Scotty Miller had a drop that drew the ire of Arians as well. You know that the WR depth chart will start with Evans, Godwin and Perriman, but no one has really jumped out and snared that #4 spot. Watson, Miller or Bobo Wilson could grab the "brass ring" with good performances in the games that start next week.

3) Jameis wasn't just good, he was REALLY good. The only knock was that he overthrew Godwin on the right sideline on a deep ball and underthrew on the left sideline on another. Other than that, I loved his performance today. He was backed up into his own end zone and instead of making a questionable throw, he tucked it and ran for 20+ yards. He had another great throw rolling to his right and finding Evans down the sideline for a big gain and a nice fade to the end zone to Mike for a touchdown. A strong performance overall for #3.

4) Another guy I loved today was TE Tanner Hudson. Arians talks about how he loves "grimy" catches and Hudson had at least three of them today. You know what you're going to get out of OJ Howard and Cam Brate, but Hudson is a really solid player and could push Antony Auclair for that #3 spot.

5) An up and down day for Matt Gay kicking the ball. He looked good, going 8 for 9; including a 62 yarder to end the drill, but he missed a PAT or two and also a 50 yard FG right down the middle to end another drill. I know he was the guy that got drafted and has the inside track over Cairo Santos, but you get the feeling from Arians that Gay needs to perform well in games regardless of how strong his leg is.

6) Good to see 4th round pick Anthony Nelson get some pressure today. In my days here, I haven't seen all that much from him but if he can get around the end like he did today, he can do some damage as a rotational guy this season. He's a big dude.

7) Jack Cichy is playing like a man possessed. The 6th round pick from the 2018 Draft is flying around there every day and if he's not a shoo-in to make this team, I'd be very surprised. He's a leader on the field and you can tell by the way guys like Minter, David and Bucannon show him love, they respect his gangster.

8) Speaking of standout linebackers..... if Devin White doesn't get 100 tackles this year, I'd be VERY surprised. Every single Training Camp practice so far, on at least one play, we all look around and go "Holy Smokes Devin White!!" The guy is special man.

9) It was hot as H E double hockey sticks again, here's Bruce talking about why.....

10) Great to see former USF head coach Jim Leavitt in the building as a guest of Coach Arians. I'm sure he'll be back on the sideline soon!

The Bucs are off Sunday and will be back at it on Monday!! Enjoy your weekend everybody!!
