My Amazing Week Learning How Marines Are Made

Every year the Marines invite educators from schools where they have recruiters for a four-day workshop where they learn what young men and women go through to go from being mere recruits to full-fledged Marines in a 13-week process that changes people from just another civilian, to military elite. Fortunately for me, they also invite a handful of media to attend as well. I couldn't implore you enough to take advantage of this opportunity if you're an educator and you get invited on this trip.

In this four-day mini boot camp, educators are treated like recruits and go through some of the drills and obstacles that Marine recruits will endure during their training. From eating next to recruits in the mess hall, to being broken down by drill instructors, these teachers get a small first-hand look at what it takes to have the discipline to become a United States Marine. The week is highlighted by participating in physical obstacles, attendance at family day where family members see their family as Marines for the first time, and graduation.

It's emotional, it's inspirational, and it's an unforgettable experience that will give you an even greater appreciation for the men and women who serve than you might already have. Take a look at some of the sights and sounds of this amazing week!

I put this video in early so you wouldn't miss it. This is the moment families see their family members as Marines for the first time, and it's pretty amazing. I'm not crying, you're crying.

This is Sargent Calvin Shamoon, and I can't thank him enough for bringing me on this incredible trip! He's never getting rid of me now!
