ST. PETERSBURG (95.3 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays traded relief pitcher Jaime Schultz to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Caleb Sampen.
Schultz, a 13th round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2013 draft, made his big league debut with the Rays in 2018, appearing in 22 games. He amassed a 2-2 record and a 5.64 earned run average, allowing 19 runs on 18 hits in 30 1/3 innings of work. He walked 17 batters and struck out 35. The 27-year-old was designated for assignment January 4 when Oliver Drake was re-acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Sampen, a 22-year-old right-hander taken in the 20th round of the 2018 draft by Los Angeles out of Wright State, spent his first professional season with Ogden of the Pioneer League (rookie). He went 0-2 in 13 appearances, including 11 starts, with a 5.04 earned run average.
Sampen is the son of former major league pitcher Bill Sampen, who played for the Expos, Royals, and Angels in a five-year career.
