Montoyo Gets Blue Jays Skipper Job

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- The Toronto Blue Jays have confirmed that they have hired Rays bench coach Charlie Montoyo as their next manager.

ORIGINAL POST (2:54 p.m.):  On the heels of Rocco Baldelli getting a manager's job, the Tampa Bay Rays have lost another coach to a division rival.

Shi Davidi of Rogers Sportsnet reports that the Toronto Blue Jays have hired Rays bench coach Charlie Montoyo to be their next manager.

Montoyo, 53, managed at every level of the Rays minor-league organization from 1997 until 2014, when he joined Kevin Cash's coaching staff in 2014 as third base coach.  He transitioned to be Cash's bench coach in 2018.

Montoyo replaces John Gibbons, who was fired for the second time as Toronto skipper at the end of the season.
