Rays Routed By Yankees 12-1

It got ugly quick at Tropicana Field on Thursday afternoon as the Rays lost to the Yankees 12-1.

Jaime Schultz got the start for the Rays, but he wasn't in there for long.

Brett Gardner led off the 1st with a double, and a pair of walks to Luke Voit and Giancarlo Stanton were sandwiched between strikeouts of Aaron Judge and Neil Walker. Gardner scored on a passed ball to put the Yankees on the board and then Rookie of the Year candidate Miguel Andujar hit a three-run home run just inside the foul pole in left to give the Yankees a 4-0 lead before the Rays could come up to bat.

New York tacked on three more in the 4th inning on an RBI double by Voit, a sac fly by Judge and an RBI single by Austin Romine. Then in the 6th, the Yankees added four more on an RBI triple by Gardner, another sac fly by Judge and back-to-back homers by Voit and Stanton.

Schultz (2-2) threw only 2/3 of an inning, giving up two hits, four runs, two walks and striking out two.

The Rays seemed to be off their game today, but Yankees starter CC Sabathia was definitely on his. Tampa Bay didn't get their first hit off the New York southpaw until Joey Wendle singled to left with two outs in the 4th.

Sabathia (9-7) went five innings giving up only one hit, striking out five.

The Rays lone run came on a solo shot by CJ Cron in the 7th inning, his 29th of the year.

Stanton hit another home run in the top of the 9th, his 37th of the season.

HOT AND HEAVY : In a game that wasn't really competitive from the start, it didn't lack its fair share of drama. Sabathia hit Jake Bauers with a pitch in the bottom of the 5th and then Andrew Kittredge threw a pitch high and behind Romine in the top of the 6th. Then, on the first pitch of the bottom half of the 6th, the Yankees lefthander drilled Jesus Sucre in the leg with a pitch and was promptly ejected alongside his manager Aaron Boone.

What's Next For The Rays : The Rays are back in action tomorrow night against the Blue Jays. RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-7, 4.23) will toe the rubber for Tampa Bay and Toronto will counter with LHP Thomas Pannone (4-1, 3.58). First pitch is slated for 7:10pm with the pregame show starting at 6pm ONLY on 620WDAE and 95.3FM, your Home of the Rays!
