Rays Start Life Without Archer, Ramos With Win

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays started the post-Chris Archer era by bashing out ten runs against Los Angeles Angels starter Tyler Skaggs and holding on for a 10-6 victory Tuesday evening at Tropicana Field.

The Rays jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, when Jake Bauers took the first pitch he saw from the left-hander and deposited it in the seats in right for his eighth home run of the season.

Kevin Kiermaier made the score 2-0 an inning later, following up a Mallex Smith double with a triple to bring in left fielder.  Daniel Robertson's groundout later in the inning would extend the lead to 3-0.

The Angels got one run back in the fourth on an RBI single by Albert Pujols off Ryan Yarbrough that scored Mike Trout, but Tampa Bay erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the inning.  Carlos Gomez started the rally with a one-out single, scoring on a double by catcher Michael Perez, his first big-league RBI.  Willy Adames followed with a walk, and Smith's infield single loaded the bases.  Kiermaier drew a walk to force in Perez, while Duffy singled in Adames and Robertson getting hit by a pitch plated Smith,  Mike Scioscia then went to the bullpen, bringing in Noe Ramirez, who allowed all three inherited runners to score on a RBI single for C.J. Cron and a two-run single by Gomez, his second hit of the inning.

Yarbrough would end up allowing six runs in five-plus innings of work, including two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and a monstrous home run to Mike Trout that hit off the C-ring in center field to end his night in the seventh, but would hold on to become the second Rays pitcher after Blake Snell to get to double-digit wins on the season, earning his tenth of the year.

Diego Castillo allowed a pair of walks but no runs in the seventh, while Jose Alvarado and Sergio Romo each worked scoreless innings of relief to end Tampa Bay's three-game losing skid and get the Rays back over .500 on the season at 54-53.

After the game, manager Kevin Cash announced that right-hander Tyler Glasnow, acquired earlier int he day from Pittsburgh that sent Chris Archer to the Pirates, would open Wednesday's middle game of the series, and right-hander Jake Faria would be activated from the 60-day disabled list and also pitch in the contest.
