ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays will open a six-game homestand with the irst of three contests against the Boston Red Sox, and will do so with their top position prospect reaching the big leagues.
The team announced Tuesday afternoon that infielder Joey Wendle was placed on the paternity list after he and his wife Lindsay welcomed their first child, a boy. To take his spot on the roster, shortstop Willy Adames has been called up from Triple-A Durham.
The 22-year-old, acquired from the Detroit Tigers in the deal that sent David Price to the Motor City at the trade deadline in 2014, has hit .311 / .387 / .466 with four homer and 25 RBI with the Durham Bulls this year. He is ranked the #2 prospect in the Rays organization, behind pitcher Brent Honeywell.
Adames is in the starting lineup tonight, playing shortstop and hitting fifth against left-hander Chris Sale.
