FORT MYERS (620 WDAE) -- Jake Faria allowed three runs without getting out of the first inning,a s the Tampa Bay Rays dropped their first Grapefruit League contest Saturday to the Boston Red Sox 4-3 at JetBlue Park.
Faria started by giving up singles to Jackie Bradley Jr. and Andrew Benintendi before Rafael Devers' double scored Bradley. Mitch Moreland added an RBI groundout and an RBI double by Sandy Leon two batters later made it 3-0.
Tampa Bay got their two runs in the top of the third, as they loaded the bases with one out and got an RBI single from Matt Duffy and a bases loaded walk to Brandon Snyder.
Boston added to their lead in the sixth as Rusney Castillo's fielder's choice scored Aneury Tavarez, while the Rays cut the deficit back to a single run thanks to a throwing error on a Kean Wong grounder that allowed Micah Johnson to score from second after doubling.
Tampa Bay got the tying run to third base in the top of the ninth with two out, but Dalton Kelly struck out to end the game.
The Rays remain in Lee County for Sunday, as they head across town to take on the Minnesota Twins. Blake Snell will make his Grapefruit League debut, taking on Kyle Gibson. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 12:30 with Countdown To Opening Day.
