Bolts Come Back From 2 Down To Beat Chicago In OT

It isn’t how you start. It is how you finish. In the 1st period Wednesday the Lightning fell behind 2-0 for the 2nd straight game. The next 2 periods the Bolts scratched and clawed their way back into the game. Chris Kunitz tied the game less than a minute into the 3rd period and Andrei Vasilevskiy made great saves to force overtime. Brayden Point was the hero in overtime as the Bolts completed the 3-2 comeback victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Bolts went down early in the 1st period for the 2nd straight games. It was one of Chicago’s best players who gave them the lead. Patrick Kane’s 7th goal of the year gave the Blackhawks the 1-0 lead less than 4 minutes into the game. The Bolts had plenty of chances to tie the game up immediately after when they had almost 5 minutes of power play time. The Chicago penalty kill played very aggressively and the risk was worth the reward. That stretch had the Lightning 0-3 on the power play early. That came back to bite the Bolts. Chicago found themselves in a 5 on 3 situation after penalties against Yanni Gourde and Victor Hedman. Kane took advantage again to double the Chicago lead.

The Bolts started the 2nd period on the power play and got their best chance of the game. Steven Stamkos got a breakaway thanks to a great pass from Andrei Vasilevskiy, but Corey Crawford made a phenomenal save to hold the 2-0 lead for the time being. That time being would end on a Chicago power play. A great save by Vasilevskiy was followed up by an odd man rush. Ondrej Palat would cash in on that rush. His shorthanded goal cut the Blackhawks lead in half. The Lightning had a late power play, but the aggressive penalty kill helped Chicago keep the 1-goal advantage as we headed to the 3rd period.

It wouldn’t take the Bolts long to tie the game up in the 3rd. Chris Kunitz got it past Crawford for his 3rd goal of the year. That goal tied it up less than a minute into the frame and changed the entire complexion of the game. That complexion turned into a goaltender’s duel. Vasilevskiy and Crawford both made saves that probably could’ve earned them jail time including Vasy absolutely robbing Panik. The great play from both goalies kept it tied and sent us into overtime.

The overtime was an outstanding back and forth. Both teams had great chances, but Chicago made the mistake. That mistake led to a Lightning power play. Brayden Point was the recipient of a great pass and he buried the puck into an empty net for the game winner.

The Bolts will have Thanksgiving off before getting back on the ice for some Black Friday hockey. Tampa Bay will travel to Washington D.C. to face the Capitals. The puck is scheduled to drop at 5 pm with pregame coverage beginning at 4:30 on our sister station News Radio 970 WFLA.
