The Tampa Bay Rays scored early, but could not hold a 3-1 advantage, as Chris Archer allowed three home runs after the fifth inning, allowing the Baltimore Orioles come back for a 6-3 win over the Rays Monday at Camden Yards.
Archer took his two-run lead in to the bottom of the sixth, but allowed back-to-back solo home runs from Hyun-Soo Kim and Jonathan Schoop, allowing Baltimore to even the contest. Baltimore then took the lead for good as Archer hit Seth Smith with a pitch followed by a two-run blast from Adam Jones.
Ryan Garton allowed Wellington Castillo to reach in the eighth with a double, and let him take third on a wild pitch before the rains came. After a 19-minute delay, Chih-Wei Hu, in his big league debut, allowed Jonathan Schoop to drive in Castillo with a sacrifice fly for a three-run deficit.
Tampa Bay started the scoring in the top of the first, as Corey Dickerson led off the game with a solo home run off Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Baltimore tied the game in the bottom of the third, as Archer loaded the bases in front of Chris Davis, whose RBI groundout scored Smith to tie the game.
Jimenez's troubles continued in the top of the fourth, as he walked Brad Miller and Steven Souza Jr. to start the inning. A walk to Tim Beckham two batters later tied the game, and Shane Peterson plated a pair with a double down the right-field line.
Derek Norris walked to re-load the bases and Orioles skipper Buck Showalter decided to bring in lefty Vidal Nuno to face left-handers Dickerson and Kevin Kiermaier, striking out both to strand the bases full and keeping the score close.
The loss drops the Rays back under .500 for the year at 10-11, including 1-7 away from Tropicana Field.
Tampa Bay will look to even the series Tuesday, as Erasmo Ramirez (2-0, 3.07 ERA) takes on Wade Miley (1-0, 1.89 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 6:00 with The Inside Pitch, presented by Sykes Financial.
