The Tampa Bay Rays blew leads of 3-0, 4-2, and 5-4 Sunday, as the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 7-5 win over the Rays Sunday at Fenway Park.
Boston starter Drew Pomeranz started out the game by walking both Steven Souza Jr. and Kevin Kiermaier, then after striking out Evan Longoria, Brad Miller tripled off the wall in left-center to bring in both runners for a 2-0 lead. Miller would then score himself on a passed ball for that 3-0 advantage.
Cobb featured similar struggles in his half of the first, as Andrew Benintendi doubled to left on a check-swing, and Mookie Betts flared a 200 foot double to right to make it 3-1. Hanley Ramirez followed with a base hit, then Mitch Moreland continued his hot hitting with a single to center to cut the lead to a single run.
Corey Dickerson pushed the lead back to two runs with a solo homer off Pomeranz in the fourth, clearing the 420 foot triangle in right-center, but a two-run blast by Sandoval in the bottom of the inning tied the game at four apiece.
Tim Beckham put the Rays back ahead in the fifth with his first home run of the season, a solo blast to make it 5-4, but Tampa Bay saw their final lead disappear in the bottom of the seventh, as Danny Farquhar gave up one-out singles to Benintendi and Betts, then walked Hanley Ramirez to load the bases for Moreland. Rays manager Kevin Cash went to Xavier Cedeno for the matchup, and Moreland, who was 15 for his previous 35, followed with a two-run single to give Boston the lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Austin Pruitt gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Christian Vazquez to make it 7-5, and the Rays went in order in the ninth against Craig Kimbrel for their fifth loss in the six games of the road trip so far.
Tampa Bay will look to salvage the finale of the road trip and come home with a .500 record. Blake Snell (0-1, 3.18 ERA) will get the start in Monday's finale, taking on knuckleballer Steven Wrigght (0-1, 13.50 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 Monday morning, with coverage on WDAE starting at 10:30.
