Rays Ambush Tanaka To Take Opening Day

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- Chris Archer threw seven complete innings, and both Logan Morrison and Evan Longoria homered and drove in three runs apiece as the Tampa Bay Rays beat up the New York Yankees 7-3 Sunday at Tropicana Field.

The Rays took advantage of a poor outing by New York starter Masahiro Tanaka, starting in the first with a base hit by Corey Dickerson, followed by a double from Kevin Kiermaier.  Longoria then drove in the first run of the season with a sacrifice fly.

Brad Miller then reached on a single and Steven Souza Jr. walked to load the bases for Morrison, whose base hit plated a pair and made it 3-0 before the first inning ended.

Archer allowed a pair of runs back in the top of the second on an RBI double by Aaron Judge, followed by a RBI groundout for Ronald Torreyes, but Longoria got the lead back to three in the bottom of the inning with a blast over the small wall in left for the first home run of the 2017 regular season.

Morrison added on in the bottom of the third, a majestic blast that traveled 407 feet landing in the seats in deep right-centerfield.

Tim Beckham followed with a double and Mallex Smith laid down a perfect bunt that catcher Gary Sanchez threw down the right-field line for an error, chasing Tanaka from the game.

Archer finished with just the two runs allowed on seven hits, walking one and striking out five in a 108-pitch performance, with 66 strikes.

Danny Farquhar worked a scoreless eighth, but the defense could not help Austin Pruitt, who allowed a pair of hits and a runner to reach on an error by Longoria, forcing Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash to use closer Alex Colome, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Chris Carter, but struck out Gary Sanchez and induced a fly ball from Greg Bird to record the save, his first of the year.

The two teams will have Monday off before resuming their three-game series Tuesday, with Jake Odorizzi (10-6, 3.69 ERA in 2016) taking on CC Sabathia (9-12, 3.91 ERA in '16).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:10, with coverage on WDAE starting at 6:00 with The Inside Pitch.
