PORT CHARLOTTE (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays held an abbreviated workout at their spring training facility Sunday, with pitchers Chris Archer and Erasmo Ramirez throwing bullpen sessions on the back field. For Ramirez, it's his first bullpen of the spring, and the first time he has thrown off a mound since tweaking his left hamstring while playing first base during drills Tuesday.
"Kind of what we anticipated," manager Kevin Cash said about getting the right-hander on the mound after missing a couple of extra days. "We knew that it was very, very minor, what he did. I'm actually excited that he more rest and extra days [off]."
Cash said that reliever Shawn Tolleson is being held back due to trying to manage the problems he's had with his back.
"Early on, we'll let him and our training staff manage his back and how he feels," Cash explained. "At this point it's all preventative and that's what we want."
Tolleson threw a bullpen early in camp, but has not thrown since.
The players also went through Photo Day, with much being made about Mallex Smith's number (he'll be the first Rays player to wear the number 0).
