Topkin On Baseball Negotiations: "It's Got To Get Done"

When it comes to the negotiations between Major League Baseball and the Players Association, most believe there is an impetus for both sides to come to an agreement. That includes long-time Rays beat reporter Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

"It's got to get done. They've got to figure out a way," Marc told Pat and Aaron Wednesday. "The fact that the NBA is starting, and the NHL has a plan, and football from everything we hear is full speed ahead. If you're baseball and you were already fighting a little bit of a losing battle trying to keep your audience, to go a year and a half without playing -- if the health and safety can be worked out -- and it doesn't happen because of a financial aspect, it's a 'pox on both their houses' kind of thing. It just can't happen that way."

They also touch on the current counterproposal by the Players Association and what it might lead to in a compromise, and how the Rays' outlook on the upcoming draft may be different because instead of 40 rounds, it's down to just five.
