The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs with the 13th overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft after trading up with the San Francisco 49ers.
Hailing from Mount Vernon, IA, the Class 2A Offensive Lineman of the Year at Mount Vernon High school was also a two-time state champion in the shot put and discus throw, as well as a state wrestling champion his senior year.
Wirfs was the first true freshman to start for Iowa under head coach Kirk Ferentz, starting in eight of ten games played splitting time at both tackle positions. Following a suspension for the season opener in 2018, Wirfs received honorable mention All-Big Ten after starting 12 games at right tackle. Wirfs' dominant play in 2019 over 13 games (10 at right tackle, three at left tackle) on the Iowa line earned him 2019 second-team Associated Press All-American and Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year honors.
