Rays Bats Awaken, Bludgeon Orioles In Sarasota

SARASOTA (WDAE) -- Brandon Lowe and Brett Sullivan each had bases-clearing hits, and Michael Perez hit a three-run homer as the Tampa Bay Rays beat up the Baltimore Orioles 15-2 in Grapefruit League action Tuesday at Ed Smith Stadium.

Lowe got the scoring started in the top of the second inning, tripling off John Means to start the inning and scoring on a base hit by Daniel Robertson, who eventually scored on a single by Mike Brosseau base hit.

The Rays added five more runs in the fourth, including a double by Lowe that plated three.

Baltimore's first hit came in the bottom of the fourth, when Chris Davis homered to the opposite field off Trevor Richards.

A RBI single by Mike Zunino gave Tampa Bay its seven-run lead back, and Perez busted the game open with a three-run homer off Dillon Tate in the seventh.

Four more runs came across in the eighth, with Randy Arozarena singling in Taylor Walls, and after loading the bases, seeing Brett Sullivan unload things with a double.

Charlie Morton worked a scoreless first inning for his first start of the spring, allowing a just a four-pitch walk to Chris Davis in his outing. The Rays also got scoreless performances from Jalen Beeks, Chaz Roe, Pete Fairbanks, Ryan Thompson, Tyler Zombro, and Sam McWilliams.

The Minnesota Twins come to Charlotte Sports Park Wednesday for the first time this spring. Blake Snell will get the start for the Rays, taking on Devin Smeltzer. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05, weather permitting.
