ST. PETERSBURG (WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays' quest for a postseason berth has taken another hit.
The team confirmed Thursday the reports from The Athletic that left-hander Blake Snell will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his elbow to remove a loose body.
The left-hander will have the surgery in St. Petersburg on Monday, performed by team doctor Koco Eaton. He is expected to be able to pitch for the team in September.
Snell is 6-7 this year, with a 4.28 ERA in 20 starts after winning a franchise record 21 games in 2018 to earn the American League Cy Young Award.
The Rays placed Snell on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 22, and will make a corresponding move to fill his spot on the active roster Friday.
