ST. PETERSBURG (WDAE) -- With the rosters for the All-Star Games being announced Sunday, the question would be whether the Tampa Bay Rays would get more than one player selected for the Midsummer Classic. It turns out they would.
Major League Baseball announced that both outfielder Austin Meadows and starting pitcher Charlie Morton were named to the American League team as reserves.
Meadows, in his first full season at the Major League level, was named the American League Player of the Week in mid-April, and is currently hitting .291 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI.
Morton, in his 12th season in the majors, was named to his second consecutive All-Star Game, having been named to the American League team as a member of the Houston Astros in 2018. The 35-year-old right-hander is currently 8-2 on the season with a 2.43 ERA, second in the American League to Mike Minor of the Texas Rangers. Morton is likely not going to play in the game, as he is currently on pace to start Sunday's first-half finale against the New York Yankees, and therefore would not be eligible to pitch.
The 2019 All-Star Game takes place Tuesday July 9 from Progressive Field in Cleveland.
