Big Day For D-Rob, Lowe Gives Rays Second Straight Spring Win

PORT CHARLOTTE (WDAE) -- Daniel Robertson homered and drove in three and Nate Lowe hit his first home run of the spring as the Tampa Bay Rays won their second straight Grapefruit League contest 5-4 over the Boston Red Sox Wednesday at Charlotte Sports Park.

After Boston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Robertson gave the Rays their first lead in the second, when he doubled in Joey Wendle and Kevin Kiermaier for a 2-1 advantage.

Tyler Cloyd allowed the Red Sox to toe the game in the third, as Rafael Devers took a first-pitch curveball and sent it on to the boardwalk in straightaway right field for a solo home run.

Lowe broke the tie in the third off Erasmo Ramirez, teeing off on a cutter that broke into his swing plane and sending the baseball on to the roof of the minor-league operations building beyond the right-center field boardwalk.

C.J. Chatham got Boston back even in the top of the fourth, but Robertson again put Tampa Bay on top with a solo shot, also off Ramirez in the bottom of the inning.

The Red Sox would tie the game one final time thanks to a Tony Renda home run in the top of the seventh off Jake Faria, but they could not pull ahead, and Emilio Boniacio would finish the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth that proved to be the game-winner.

Tampa Bay will welcome the Minnesota Twins to Charlotte Sports Park Thursday evening as Blake Snell will make his spring debut, taking on Adalberto Mejia. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 6:30.
